Owings Steals Trone Outdoor Championship From Holbrook In Final Turn at Trail-Way

OWINGS STEALS TRONE OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP FROM HOLBROOK IN FINAL TURN AT TRAIL-WAY

HANOVER, PA - When Steve Owings is running second and on your tail at Trail-Way Speedway, you are never safe. There can be no mistakes.

David Holbrook did everything right for most of the 25-Lap event. He beat Owings early and fought off every challenge over the race distance.

But there was one hiccup ... lapped traffic. It was congested enough on the last lap for Owings to catch Holbrook in a precarious spot and pass the leader coming to the checker for a narrow .009 victory in the entertaining 358 Sprint Car Trone Outdoor Championship.

“That’s what you need here,” Owings said. “Everybody can run a really fast lap, and he ran a lot of fast laps. We just needed somebody to slow him down a little bit to get him.

“We came out down here, and the number didn’t change, but I thought I had him by a little bit. When we came back around, it was like, ‘Did I win, did I lose?’ Thank God, for lapped traffic.”

Owings started on the pole, but Holbrook, who started on the outside of the front row, raced side-by-side with the track kingpin down the backstretch and was able to pull ahead to lead the first circuit.

Things slowed down in a hurry on Lap 2. Justice Forbes, Tim McClelland, and Cody Phillips were involved in a three-car melee in Turn 1.

Holbrook led the restart and pulled out to a 1.071-second lead within one lap. By the time Lap 5 was scored, he caught the back of the field. That allowed Owings to close the gap to .436 seconds by Lap 7.

Before Owings could make a serious bid for the top spot, Kyle Rohrbaugh hit the outside wall in Turns 3 and 4 on Lap 8. But that didn’t slow his charge over the final 17 laps of green-flag racing.

Owings kept pounding the bottom and pulled to within .234 seconds by the 12th circuit. Holbrook matched his move by passing the lapped car of Tony Hippensteel II to increase his lead by two-tenths on Lap 13.

Just when Owings looked like he was going to make a move, he hit the berm in Turn 2. That allowed Holbrook to extend his advantage to 1.579 seconds on Lap 15.

But Owings didn’t go away. He matched Holbrook move for move in lapped traffic and was able to close to .225 seconds with one lap to go.

A host of lapped cars slowed Holbrook’s assault. He was side-by-side with one coming to the stripe, and it allowed Owings to sneak by both cars and take the win by a narrow margin.

“We had the wing back too far and started to push,” Owings said. “At the end, I started to put it back forward. Once you get to lapped cars, you have to get that wing back forward, or it’s going to push.

“He went low down there, and I knew he was in no man’s land. It’s not good to lead there on the last lap or two. He ran a hell of a race, and it’s a shame he’s not here, but it’s a hell of a lot nicer for us to be standing here.”

Holbrook settled for second, with Mike Bittinger taking third 4.339 seconds behind the leader. Brett Strickler and Riley Emig completed the top five.

In the final point race for the 600 Micro Sprint division, Jim Young started on the outside pole and wired the field in the 20-Lap affair.

There were three cautions over the race distance, but nothing slowed Young down. He took the checker by 2.074 seconds over Tyler Leese.

Brad Weber finished third and claimed the championship by four points over Rodney Westhafer, who finished eighth. Daniel Bair and Randy Kunkle Jr. completed the top five.

Sammy Rial started sixth on the grid before surging to the front and earning the victory in the 20-Lap Street Stock feature.

Bailey Tolson started third and made his way to the front in a hurry, blasting to the lead on Lap 1. He led the first 11 circuits before giving way to Rial.

From there, Rial was able to hold off Kody Sites in the closing stages for the win. Chris Transeau, Shane McQuay, and Aaron Beard completed the top five.

In the Scramble Car main event, Robbie Carroll grabbed the lead at the start and led all 15 laps for the victory.
